Adequate housing is a basic human need. The provision of quality housing at affordable prices plays a substantial part in achieving social harmony. Ensuring quality of life and of housing for citizens is an explicit aim of the Federal Government. Housing policy faces tremendous challenges. High-quality, secure housing provision at affordable prices is essential for social stability. Housing markets in Germany are characterized by a high level of provision coupled with high quality standards; at the same time, pressure on the housing markets continues to grow in those regions with stronger economies, in larger cities and in several of the country’s university towns. We have to put in place the conditions necessary for quality housing that is affordable for all and at the same time energy efficient and suitable for people of all ages.
